Robert C.
Shuman, M.D.
and the medical
professionals at Physician's Choice have been Marietta and north
metro Atlanta's premier Medical Weight-Loss and resource for Nutrition,
Healthy Lifestyle and Disease Prevention Education since 1996.
Dr. Shuman graduated from the Medical College of Georgia and served his
residency in anesthesia at the University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill. As a Board Certified Anesthesiologist he practiced anesthesiology
and pain management at Kennestone Hospital until 2000.
It was then that he "switched gears" and focused his full time medical
practice attention on his passion for sharing the message of good
nutrition and healthy lifestyle and the role they play in disease
prevention and longevity. Board Certified by the American Board of
Bariatric Medicine, Dr. Shuman has over 40 years of medical, pain
management and nutrition experience.
Dr. Shuman's Prolotherapy Story -A Better Way for Pain Relief
Prior to "switching gears" and focusing his medical practice on
nutrition, disease prevention and weight loss, Dr. Robert Shuman had
spent most of his medical career preventing and relieving pain. During
his 40 years as a Board Certified anesthesiologist, a large number of
patients sought relief from chronic pain, from Dr. Shuman. Using "state
of the art" pain management procedures such as epidural spinal
injections, steroids, anti-inflammatory medications and narcotics, the
pain relief for many of these patients was short term. This temporary
pain relief came with a price, not just the financial burden but with
risks and side effects such as infection, allergic reaction, headache,
suppressed immune function, impaired healing and the increasing need for
repeat procedures or surgery to manage pain.
There had to be a better way...
Chronic pain limits activity and quality of life. Back pain is the
leading cause for missed work and loss of income. For those who are
overweight, the challenge of losing weight becomes greater when faced
with knee pain, back pain or joint pain. Medications prescribed to treat
pain often cause weight gain and orthopedic surgeons are hesitant to
perform surgery on the obese patient. Obese patients often say that they
feel "trapped" in pain.
Several years ago Dr. Shuman was looking for a way to relieve the
shoulder pain he was experiencing after lifting furniture. This is when
he discovered prolotherapy which is based on the simple principle that
the body has the capacity to heal itself. With prolotherapy treatments
the shoulder pain was eliminated and he found that his shoulder actually
felt stronger than before the injury!
After personally experiencing such positive results with prolotherapy,
he set upon a course to learn as much as could about prolotherapy by
studying and observing prolotherapy techniques from leading prolotherapy
physicians. The medical evidence is clear that prolotherapy offers a
proven, simple, safe technique that provides a cure for many chronic
painful conditions without major surgery or steroids.
With this knowledge and understanding, Dr. Shuman is confident that
prolotherapy for chronic pain is the better way. |
