Prolotherapy Case Histories - Neck Pain

Case 1 - 48 Year-Old-Female - Robert Rowen, M.D.
Case 2 - 63 Year-Old-Female -
Ross Hauser, M.D.

CASE 1 From Robert Jay Rowen, M.D.

CASE HISTORY: D. M. 48 pure blooded Yupik Eskimo woman from the bush developed severe intractable neck pain, marked limitation of neck motion and disabling headaches progressing over years. Radiologic studies showed chronic degeneration, especially at C5-6. She had free medical care through the Indian Health Service, but they refused to consider sending her to me for Prolotherapy. Instead they had recommended fusion. On her own and at her own expense, she began making weekly Prolotherapy treatments flying 400 miles to Anchorage each visit. The treatments were uncomfortable to her and she was not sure it was worth it at first, but she noticed improvement even after the initial treatment. After 8 sessions, the pain and headaches were virtually gone and she asked me to quickly do a series of treatments on her low back before I left Alaska for California. She continued her weekly airplane trips to Anchorage to complete a series of sessions and reported nearly total elimination of her SI pain. Her neck range of motion measurements documented a 30 degree improvement in rotation and a 20 degree improvement in flexion-extension at the same time of near resolution of pain.

CASE 2 From Ross Hauser, M.D.
63 Year-old-Woman

The patient had chronic pain since a horseback riding accident in 1976. Since then, she has neck pain that radiates down to the shoulders and arms. She was told she might have pinched nerve. She went to an orthopedic and did an EMG. EMG came out negative – she does not have pinched nerve. She has headaches, pain and stiffness on the neck region. From the accident, she also has low back pain, left hip pain and bilateral knee pain. She describes her pain as sharp twinges" and a lot of stiffness. Since then, she had limited activities and developed depression. She was in anti-depressants for years". She said that she has to take medication or "else can not function and not able to raise my children." She took Tylenol #3 for years. She tried chiropractic  treatment but did not help her.

This is her own word describing her pain before Prolotherapy. I had pain for 20 years. I had excruciating pain and severe headache. I can not even move my head either side without sharp pain. I took Tylenol with codeine and anti-depressant for years to relieve my pain. Even with the medications that I was taking, I am still in a lot of pain. I had MRI done and it shows little arthritis. Then a friend told me about prolotherapy. Since I tried everything to relieve my pain, I was willing to try Prolotherapy."

The patient came to CMRS in February of 1998. She had two treatments on the neck region and low back. This is what she said after two treatments. What a relief. I can move my neck from side to side. I do not have severe headaches or even mild headache. I do not have the numbness and tingling in my arms anymore. I am totally different person now – pain free. My knees are much, much better. I can stoop now which I was not able to do before. I can walk without knee pain." Mary’s knees were treated four times. She said that she takes glucosamine and chondrointin sulfate help with her knee.
