PROLOTHERAPY is the essential technique needed to regenerate joints. The solution used can be beneficial but is NOT the reason joints become strong again and functional again. If you are seeking regeneration of any joint, be sure to seek a physician who is well experienced and skilled in treating joints with prolotherapy. You will know if the physician is confident in their treatment skills and in prolotherapy if they do not perform or refer for cortisone (steroids and epidurals), nerve blocks, stimulators, ablations and rarely send patients to surgery.

PLATELETS serve a special function. While the prolotherapy technique (micro-injury to the tissues that are compromised) is essential to regeneration, adding platelets to treatment is not essential but whole platelets (platelet rich plasma) GREATLY assists in adding more regenerative effect to each treatment. Platelets are the 911 responders that show up to stop micro-bleeding and begin the repairs. Platelets are also the master contractors. Platelets primarily delegate the work and when more platelets are added, there is more delegation of regeneration by the platelets to construct healthy tissue.

MUSCULOSKELETAL ULTRASOUND is more refined than a MRI to image the fibers of the ligaments and tendons that have frayed, broken off, thinned down and are thereby causing weakness, stiffness, collapse of the joint, cartilage damage, arthritic debris, and loss of range of motion, all of which results in the compensation of other joints and tissues, leading to increases in degeneration to additional areas and joints.

PROTOCOLS are also essential for success. Science informs us of the wound healing cycle of 28-30 days. Over the past 25 years, we have found that 28-30 day intervals is optimal for joint regeneration. Duration of the treatments to affected tissues must be sufficient and each treatment must be thorough. This means that there are many parts of the affected joint to treat in each session in order to be thorough. It also means that there must be enough treatment sessions to sufficiently treat the joint to get ahead and stay ahead of degeneration that occurs with aging. This is to maintain stability, strength, and function for the remainder of the patient’s lifetime, (unless of course there is further injury or assault to the affected joint).

EDUCATION: We pride ourselves in educating patients so they understand what is needed for regenerative treatments to be both effectual and lasting. Effective treatment and lasting results have almost nothing to do with what is in the syringe or the resultant inflammatory process that occurs for a brief time after any injury, including micro-injury. In fact, anti-inflammatory foods, food based supplementation and specific supplements and homeopathics, activities that are safe for the injured joint(s) that aid in oxygenation and circulation (most of which rapidly reduce inflammation) are well accepted as not being contraindicated for prolotherapy. Inflammation from micro-injury during prolotherapy is brief and is not why prolotherapy is effective. Prolotherapy is effective because the body functions to heal injury no matter how small the injury. The micro-injury informs the body where to lay down healthy tissue. The practitioner’s skills must be exceptional as to the location of these tissues as well as performing thorough treatment to the injured tissues.
